Orthopedic bolster beds for dogs might not be a bad idea as your pet starts getting older.
These sturdy, therapeutic dog beds are able to support aging bones and muscles far better than regular matresses. In addition, pups that suffer from arthritis, joint problems, or are recovering from an injury or surgery find the orthopedic bolster beds a comfortable place to rest and build back their strength.
The floor, of course, is not a healthy place to sleep on once your canine starts having any medical problems associated with bones and muscles. And conventional, bumpy pet bedding that does not evenly distribute the weight of your dog will not be able to provide relief, and could lead to aggravation of arthritis.
Orthopedic bolster beds for dogs contain extra foam and are lightweight. Plus, these beddings are closer to the ground, so your pooch can move onto and off of the bed with ease. Look for an orthopedic bolster dog bed made with materials that are nontoxic, stain resistant and easily washable.
Also, when you are shopping for bolster beds, find one that will guard against viruses, bacteria, parasites, allergens, dust mites and insects, and that will repel bad odors.
If you find your pup is not getting adequate sleep or is constantly tired, consider switching to an orthopedic dog bed to help it sleep better.
Proper bed size should certainly be a factor when you are comparison shopping. Doggies tend to move around a lot in their sleep, so the size you choose must be big enough to accommodate this nocturnal activity.
One good brand is the Buddy Beds Orthopedic Memory Foam, which uses the same memory foam technology you’ve seen on TV for regular mattresses. They’re good options for senior animals with hip or joint problems, canine arthritis or dysplasia. The foam molds and contours to your pet’s body, and the material is nontoxic — no small detail when you truly care about your puppy’s health. As for price, well, one of these products might cost $300, however, which is why they’re known as “the Rolls Royces of dog beds.” (Check out our luxury pet bed reviews.)
Another popular brand, Snoozer Luxury Sofa, costs a bit less (starting at around $160) but still offers excellent orthopedic support and a quality memory foam interior.
If you have two pups, you’re in luck. Check out the “Double Dog” Ortho Sleeper Sofa Dog Bed, which we found online for about $170. It features a medical-grade memory foam padding and a water-resistant liner.
You will be making your buddy very happy and providing it with a lot of comfort when you buy one of these special orthopedic bolster beds for dogs.

I thought that I was into all manner of things to add comfort and support to ageing dogs. I live in the UK and I have never heard of this type of bed. However I do use magnetic beds to prevent aches and pains.
My rigid plastic dog beds are forty five years old; they are still intact and hygienic. I have never bought posh dog beds because it is almost impossible to put them into the washing machine.
I use plastic beds which are cheap and easy to clean. Nevertheless my dog beds are very comfortable and they look very posh, when they are dressed up to provide comfort for my dogs.
I cut foam for the base; I then drape a duvet over this to hang over the sides. This conceals the fact that they are cheap plastic beds. I buy cheap pretty duvet covers to blend in with my colour scheme. I then put “Vet Beds” on top on the duvet. The contents of the bed can be put into my washing machine and I clean the plastic beds with vinegar every week.
Ortho, Maybe I’m wrong, but I think that if your bed is comfortable enough, the dog will take to it quickly and easily — no “trick” or training required!
is there anyway we can get a dog to like sleeping on this bed, like say a particular odour or some trick in this form of training. Any help in this regard would be great.
Thanks for this post! I didn’t know that orthopedic bolster beds existed until now. It says they are for dogs, but I’m sure it would work for my cat as well. I might give it a shot.
@ Orthopedic – The easiest way to do that is to place your dog’s current toys, blankets and bed on or beside the new one so it takes on a familiar scent.
Well thanks really for the advice. Reading this I have bought an orthopedic bed from a local seller. Though I think we will need a lot more tricks to get our chikoo (dog) on her bed, since she is way smarter than dogs (or maybe even us)….
