PediPaws Pet Nail Trimmer is a grooming tool that files your dog’s nails with a battery-operated rotating emery strip hidden inside a plastic housing. It sure beats filing the nails by hand, and it especially beats clipping the nails with clippers (which can crack and break the nails and hurt your pet).

PediPaws is fast, and somewhat easy to use too. Like the Dremel Pet Nail Grooming Kit, it is designed to file only the sharp tips of the dog nails, so it doesn’t go down too far. That means less chance of injury (cutting into the “quick”) during grooming. Spend a few seconds on one nail, then move on to the next.

It makes a significant amount of (loud) noise, so if your pet is sensitive to sharp noises, PediPaws will not be a good fit. Your dog should be patient — and not squirming or moving around as you are trying to file the nails. The instructions suggest you may actually have to pin the dog down.

You might find that bigger dogs with hard nails will have a tougher time with this tool. Some pet groomers report difficulty with the plastic part of the tool that the nail fits into.

Another down side: the batteries don’t last very long in the PediPaws, so be prepared to buy more Duracells.

So does PediPaws work well? Despite a few significant negatives, PediPaws does work fairly well, and when all’s said and done, it’s a time saver. Try introducing your dog to this new grooming tool very slowly. Your pet can gradually grow accustomed to it. Turn on the PediPaws file and let it run a bit before trying to use it on the pet.

By the way, if you’re wondering, Does PediPaws work on cats — you’d probably be best to stay away from it. You will have a difficult time fitting the claw into the plastic hole far enough to reach the emery strip. It’s not a good solution for trimming cat’s claws.
