administer dog medicine

It is very difficult to give medicine to your dog or cat.

Most pets react badly whenever you try to give them medicine. They could get very aggressive or feel stressed when you try to give them the meds. There is also the danger that your pet might bite or scratch your hand and fingers during the process.

Let us learn how to administer dog medicine.

  1. Giving a liquid medicine to a dog is a lot tougher than you think. You will need special tools. Use a small dropper or a glass bottle to administer liquid medicines. Never give the pet meds when your dog is stressed or is playing.
  2. You can always take the help of another person to give medicine to your dog. Ask a friend or a family member to hold the dog in a firm but gentle manner. You can relax your pup by patting it on its head. Slowly pull the lower jaw, and insert the dropper with the medicine. After administering the medicine, it is important that the dog closes its mouth; you can gently force it to do so. This will enable the dog to swallow the medicine.
  3. If the medicine is in pill form, you will need to sit with your dog to administer it. Slowly open the dog’s mouth and pop the pill inside. Take care to put it in as far as possible. Be careful about your hands and fingers while doing this. Make sure that the dog gobbles it and does not spit it out.
  4. Medicines in pill form can also be made into a fine powder and mixed along with your puppy’s daily diet. Dogs have very powerful sense of smell, and they can easily sniff out the pet meds if you don’t mix them properly. Mixing the powder in wet food is much easier than in dry food.
  5. If your dog has a particular favorite food, you can mix the pill in this food.
