Question: What is the best way to treat fleas for a dog? Specifically, what flea dip is best for pets?
I’ve used flea drips, flea shampoos and treated my home for fleas. Yet my toy poodle still has fleas. He’s not covered in them. I just want to make my dog more comfortable and of course, myself — I am allergic to fleas.
Best Ways to Treat Fleas
Flea dips and flea collars for dogs and cats used to be the only alternative many years ago. They were better than nothing, but they are toxic to pets and you, and not extremely effective.
There is a new generation of flea products for dogs and cats. They are more expensive but well worth it. They target special receptors on fleas. Good pet products include Frontline Plus, Advantage and Revolution. It is also a good idea to wash your pet’s bedding, vacuum frequently and treat your house for a few months. The Raid Flea Fogger works well to treat your house for fleas. You could also hire a professional flea extermination company.
When you are rid of the adult fleas, you can just stick with the preventive and shouldn’t need to treat your home any more.

Over the years, I have shared my home and my bedroom with numerous dogs; thankfully I have never had a problem with fleas. I am aware that flea treatments can be purchased from the vets; however I hate the thought of my dogs being exposed to dangerous chemicals.
Instead I make my own flea preventative preparations. If you already have fleas in your house, it could be too late to use this. However for those of you whose dogs are not infected, try the following to prevent infestations.
There are lots of treatments for killing and preventing fleas, they are full of nasty chemicals and they are expensive. I make up a solution for my dogs which prevents fleas, although it is also said to kill fleas I have no experience of this because my dogs have never had fleas. Also ticks die on arrival. .
Use a few drops of Citricidal and essential oils of Citronella, Tea Tree and Lavender. Add this to half a pint of vinegar or water and sponge a small amount onto your dog’s coat. I use this every week.
