Beagle ear infection treatment Beagle ear infection treatment is an important concern. Owners of this dog breed are constantly in a battle against ear problems. The drooping ears do not allow for air to circulate properly within the ear cavity. The lack of air flow combined with the heat that stays trapped within the ear causes moisture. Moist areas, of course, are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, yeast and fungal infections.

Prevention is the best way to reduce ear infections in a beagle, or any other hound for that matter. Clean the ears thoroughly each day. Canine ear wipes for this purpose are available at most pet supply stores. These are an easy and inexpensive way to help keep your puppy healthy. Use the wipe to clean away dirt from the inside of the ear leather as well as the outer edge of the ear.

Give It Some Air

Another way to help prevent beagle ear infections is to allow air to get inside the ear. This will dry the inside and eliminate excess moisture. When your dog is napping on its side, simply flip the ear leather over his head. Do this every time the hound is on its side.

Some beagles will automatically shake their heads to right their ears. If this is the case, you will need a length of gauze and a small piece of tape. Lift the ears and lay them on top of the head. Wrap the gauze in a fashion to hold the ears up and use the tape to connect it. The gauze will hold the ear flaps up and allow air to circulate into the canal, hence drying the inner moisture.

Other Treatments

In some cases, DIY beagle ear infection treatment may be done using products readily available in the home. However, ear solutions should be given only with the guidance of a veterinarian, or you risk permanently damaging your dog’s hearing.

Meat-based canine diets prove to help cut down on the occurrence of yeast infections in beagles. Eliminating or drastically minimizing the yeast and flour in your dog’s diet may reduce infections. Read the ingredients carefully. If your puppy’s current food contains flour or yeast, switch pet food. You will see a marked improvement.

Naturally, if your hound is still having problems with his ears, please consult your veterinarian, who will always be able to provide the best, safest beagle ear infection treatment.

You need to be careful -- washing your pet’s ears out too frequently will actually increase the risk of infection. To prevent infection, the best thing to do is get a commercial ear cleaner and use it once weekly. This will clean out any wax, but is infrequent enough to prevent excessive wetting of the ear canal which leads to maceration.

If your pet actually gets an ear infection, then a visit to the vet is necessary. Most home treatments will not be effective if there truly is a bacterial or yeast infection.

Ear infections are very common problem with both dogs and cats, and early treatment is very important.

Friends of mine who are beagle owners have spoken of this problem, and I know they use Zymox Otic to help their beagles. Rub it into the ears on the inside of the flap, in the grooves, and on the the opening of the ear near the head.

The “home remedy” concoction has too much alcohol for my beagle’s ears and my vet said the irritation caused by (unnecessary) DAILY WASHINGS can upset the Ph balance in the dogs ear. Plus….. alcohol stings!! Instead, try a Tea Tree Oil based, Ph balanced ear wash available at all major pet product stores & on-line. My dog likes having her ears cleaned regularly = puppy treats!!
