Maddie the ghost-hunting dogTV’s newest celebrity dog doesn’t perform tricks, look pretty in a purse or tell Timmy’s parents he’s stuck in a well. Maddie, a gorgeous cattle dog mix, hunts ghosts.

That’s right… a dog ghostbuster.

The new member of the TAPS team (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) made her debut on Wednesday, March 22 on the SyFy channel’s Ghost Hunters.

Rescued last year by TAPS lead investigator and dog handler Jason Hawes, Maddie is a year-old German Shepherd/Australian cattle dog with a nose for the paranormal.

“She’s basically an untainted investigator,” says TAPS member Grant Wilson. “She’s not bringing in any predispositions, she hasn’t made any judgments ahead of time, whether this place is haunted or not. You can’t get more honest than a dog.”

What kind of dog is Maddie on Ghost Hunters?

What kind of dog is Maddie on Ghost Hunters? A German Shepherd/Australian cattle dog mix.

On Maddie’s debut episode of Ghost Hunters, she went to the Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota, to investigate a haunted hotel. Although no spirits were found that night — as is customary on the show — Maddie comported herself well.

“We’ve been able to teach her to let us know if there are any signs of animal activity in a location,” Hawes says. “Also, she picks up on high-magnetic fields.”

I’m not sure about “high-magnetic fields,” but I firmly believe animals can sense things humans cannot, whether it’s because of their heightened senses or their canine intuition. I’m not sure if ghosts fall under that purview, but if they do, I’m sure Maddie will sniff them out.

She’s a catahoula leopard dog mix; I’d bet money on it. I have a purebred catahoula myself, and Maddie looks very much like him. Maddie’s ears are different, though, which leads me to believe she’s a mix (purebred catahoula’s ears are more floppy looking), plus her tail is a bit bushy for a purebred catahoula, but she’s built like one (size, standard, head shape, etc.).

Interesting. Who else out there thinks Maddie is a catahoula mix?

I agree 100%. She looks a lot like our baby Bailey. She too is a catahoula leopard dog. They are such amazing dogs!

How do you entertain your c.l.d.? Mine suffers from separation anxiety unless he’s allowed to roam free… How’s yours? Thanks.

Maddie kicks ass -- she’s better looking than Jason, that’s for sure! :P

Maddie rocks! I am going to be the president of her fan club.

I totally agree. I own a catahoula also, and the first time I saw Maddie, I about died! Her fur is a little long and, yes, the ears are different, but the eyes, markings, and ability to do the job, definitely leopard dog! Great breed, and if they do pick up on spirits that explains why mine is such a chicken. ;)

Actually, I believe that Maddie is a Kelpie! Kelpies are a mix of dingo and Australian cattle dog. I own a Kelpie; they have the same body shape, ears and bushy tail. The reason she looks like a catahoula is because of the dingo side. Kelpies are a very rare breed here in the States, but the ranchers and farmers of Australia breed them this way for a better working dog.

Kelpie — now that’s an interesting proposition. However, if we are to believe the show’s producers, the answer to the question “what kind of dog is Maddie on ‘Ghost Hunters’?” is part Australian cattle dog and part German shepherd. Probably with some other stuff thrown in.

Either way, Maddie is clearly pretty awesome.

Here is a photo of Maddie with her two siblings. It’s a spotty paradise!

I was right! Found this from an article at Syfy:

“Maddie is part Australian cattle dog and part German shepherd.”
