Cat Pee Wine – Does This Wine Taste Like Cat Pee?

When it comes to wine, here’s the average dude:

“Hmm, tastes pretty good and has kind of a kick.”

Here’s the connoisseur:

“Olive and earth notes accent a plum and raspberry character. A concentrated finish with firm tannins that wrap around the ripe berry flavor. Just a hint of cat pee.”

Wait, what?!! Cat pee wine? Huh?

Turns out “cat pee” is a desirable characteristic of wine. It’s a pungent, herbal aroma, not an actual ingredient. Even Consumer Reports had good things to say about it: “Compare it to an off-note that adds complexity to a piece of music.”

What’s more, there’s even a wine named after the nose-prickling feline scent: Cat’s Pee on a Gooseberry Bush, a Sauvignon Blanc that its maker, Coopers Creek, calls “extremely playful.”

But while “cat pee” is considered a delightful wine feature, other weirdo descriptors are not. For example, “wet dog,” “mouse droppings” and “horse manure” are used to describe flawed wines.

Duh.

So let’s lift our glass of cat pee wine and toast to that.
