The best names for pets (and the worst names for pets) just might surprise you. The Deseret Morning News in Utah in 2007 played the name game with pets.

The newspaper obtained dog and cat license records and documented the varied names of pets. The most popular dog name in Salt Lake County? Max. Most popular cat name? Shadow. Those two names take our vote for best names for pets.

Worst Names for Pets

But the fun part was discovering all of the worst names for pets: Stinky, Booger, Dammit, Fatty, Hooker and Mr. Ugly. Then there’s Monster, Lucifer, Hitler and Misery. And the pets who apparently belong to drunks: Whiskey, Tequila, Budweiser and Captain Morgan.

Of course some of the very worst names for pets take absolutely no imagination… the worst name for dogs: Dog (31 instances!); worst name for cats: Cat; then of course there’s Girl and Boy.
