This is the first of a series of posts about the sponsors of the Pets Adviser & DogTime Media Halloween Pets Photo Contest. First up, we take a closer look at modern-design cat boutique H.J. Mews.
To hear H.J. Mews spin its own history, you’ll need to take a seat by the fireplace, close your eyes and be transported to another time and place. Henry James Mews — yes, that’s his last name, Mews — was an acclaimed English craftsman in the early 1900s.
In 1920 the H.J. Mews Bespoke Kitten Boutique was launched in New York City, featuring high-quality cat furniture and toys produced over several generations, always mindful of the owner’s discerning taste and reputation for fine craftsmanship. Oh, and H.J. Mews was a cat. Of course.
Next, the company says with a wink, H.J. Mews’s great-great-great-grandson opened up an online version of the store, hjmews.com, bringing the “boutique experience to a larger audience.”
Amusing backstory aside, H.J. Mews actually launched this past spring. The company sums it up far better than I can:
“Born out of frustration with a limited, dog centric market and the unnavigable offerings of kitschy online cat stores, at H.J. Mews we believe that if you want your cat to behave like a gentleman, you have to treat him like one. We are committed to uncovering the best the market has to offer, providing our clientele and their feline friends with the highest quality in product and customer service.”
A beautiful logo and top-notch web design lets you know right away that this site is the real deal.
What you’ll find at H.J. Mews is gorgeous modern-design-inspired cat furniture, feeders, toys and other accessories. I like the Canopy Lounge, made of a bent walnut plywood shell, and the multi-purpose Couchette double-sided chaise. On the lower end of the price range, you’ll also find high-quality treats, like dried Japanese sardines in a letter-pressed bag, and pure organic catnip, which the company describes as “legal ecstasy” for cats.

Ultra-cute Halloween gift package from H.J. Mews
But I really want to draw your attention to H.J. Mews’s most recent offering: a Halloween-themed gift package, featuring three awesome hand-crafted cat toys, one high-quality themed bowtie (you get to choose from five available options), plus the dried sardines and catnip. Your cat will totally flip out!
To get this spooky-good gift package before Halloween, you’ll have to act fast. Sales end Monday, Oct. 24, at 7pm Eastern.
And don’t forget, the Pets Adviser & DogTime Media Halloween contest includes cats too!
