How to Deal With a Dog That Drools Too Much

Question: I have a basset hound and occasionally his constant stream of drool finds its way onto my hands. Is this a health hazard for me? If there’s nothing around for me to wipe my hands on, sometimes I’ll just rub this wet mess into his fur. Does this make me a bad owner? How to deal with a dog that drools too much?

Dog Drools Too Much

Answer: Dealing with your dog’s drool is usually harmless, yet not necessarily sanitary. Dogs, like humans, carry germs in their mouths and in their saliva. A basset hound, in particular, is close to the ground. Is your dog fond of picking things up off the sidewalk? Germs from the street can wind up on your hands this way.

And, uh, what’s this business about rubbing his drool into his fur? This doesn’t make you a bad owner, but you should definitely stop this habit immediately. Your pooch is dependent on you for many things, one of which is grooming. Come on, it’s simply not nice to do this. The sanitation issue comes into play here, too.

Always carry tissues or baby wipes (did you know there’s even specially made doggie wipes?), and get some hand sanitizer. This way neither you nor your hound’s fur has to suffer.
